Vasyl Hrynevych

Vasyl Hrynevych

Born on January 10, 1990 in Lviv. Father Anton is an inventor, mother Lyudmila is a clothing designer. Since childhood, I watched my parents work at home. Mom created finished clothes from pattern to sewing, and father liked to "twist TVs" with his son on his lap, he could create a completely working one from several damaged ones.

Vasylev's childhood was purely urban, it fell on the harsh 1990s, when Sykhiv (a sleepy district in the southeast of Lviv) was frightening with its criminality. Vasyl shares his childhood memories in detail, calls the architecture of the district in which he grew up "punitive" and is sincerely glad that Sikhiv has changed. One of the reasons, the artist ironizes, was the "bet on religion" - many churches and prayer complexes appeared, which by their very nature resist street aggression.
Vasyl has two sisters, and both are creatively realized: a designer of interior fabrics and a colorist and stylist in the beauty industry. He did not immediately choose an artistic direction. First, he graduated from a medical school, where he developed a knack for sculpting in dental disciplines, and then successfully worked as a dental technician for more than four years. Over time, he chose a new direction and entered the Academy of Arts, sculpture class of Ivan Samotos, where he studied from 2011 to 2017. Ironically, Hrynevych is one of his last graduates. After approving the diploma project, Vasyl recalls: "Samotos was strangely moved, sincerely happy and even kissed me, and the next day he died...".

"The thesis "On the edge" is a kind of recursion, actually a thesis about a thesis, the death of a student and the birth of an unemployed person, or the birth of an artist. It is not a relief or a sculpture, it is a flattened sculpture. For the defense of the diploma project, he made three versions in plaster: one meter, 3D model and miniature. This was my creative work, A woman who seems to run, seems to stand up, seems to sit, looks in one direction, directed in the other, arms folded. Everything that Samotos taught us, I almost violated, balanced on the edge, but a little more - and this violation would have become striking.

During my studies, I was on the Maidan. Under the influence of the events, he made a two-meter figure of Roman Shukhevich, which was left at the Academy (at the request of Ivan Samotos, because he highly appreciated the work). I have a 3D model of Shukhevych, I could even reproduce this sculpture. He is real, powerful as a tank, a universal soldier."
