The global openness of Ukrainian folklore to the present resulted in development of new forms of myth-creation in the works of Ukrainian artists. Neofolk project collects these artifacts and offers a vision of the origins of Ukrainian ethnicity in contemporary art.
Neofolk project paints a portrait of modern Ukrainian reality without delving into its minor problems, avoiding the morass of international politics. Here and now the best Ukrainian artists are creating the new mythology with new symbolic language that is a result of both authors' spontaneous intuitions and a well contemplated strategies of a deliberately chosen directions in their creative work. The aim of the Neofolk project is to make a “snapshot" of this chaotic movement to and from folkloric art in contemporary Ukrainian art. Vigor and repetition, brightness and decorativeness, puzzling images and spells, openness to experiments and ritualization of the creative process, distant author's interpretation and frank and proud imitation... The investigation is just beginning, but neofolk art is already working, generously sowing the field of the “collective unconscious" with new optimistic images of the nation's future.
