As part of the 9th festival French Spring Ya Gallery Art Center in cooperation with the Embassy of France in Ukraine, French Institute in Ukraine, Toulouse gallery Croix-Baragnon and Toulouse (France) city administration presents exhibition "Figure Vivace" featuring French and Ukrainian artists.

Figurative art holds an important place in the XX century art history. Though in 1970-80s French institutions abandoned it, praising conceptual art, it didn't disappear. I am speaking of the "purgatory", works of these artists are rarely exhibited and sold. In Great Britain and Germany, where painting was always highly valued, cultural institutions' position in regard to this is different. They support Neo-expressionism and artists like Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, as well as Baselitz, Lupertz and Penck. In the past several years more and more exhibitions and large scale fairs of contemporary art demonstrate productivity of figurative movement among artists. Exhibition Figure Vivace evidences this reality and the passion of young art for portraying the body. All the artists presented - most of them were born in 1970-80s - exclusively cater to figurative art in their works and explorations. The exhibition unites regional, Paris and Ukrainian artists in formal and technical pluralism around one idea.

At the end of the last year Anatoliy Bielov already took place in the project FIGURE VIVACE dedicated to the theme of physicality in the gallery Espace Croix-Baragnon in Toulouse, France, with his projects Balance and Struggle and also presented art-book "The Most Pornographic Book in the World".

It was a great experience to see and learn about art situation in France, it was also interesting to meet and talk to French artists. Croix-Baragnon invited all the artists participating in the project together and introduced them to each other.

At the turn of artistic epochs new figurative art becomes especially relevant. While staying for a long time in conflict and opposition to abstract trends, phenomenon of figurative art acquired new freedom, having released itself from the burden of prejudice and canonicity – as opposed to abstractionism that managed to canonize and industrialize tiself. After a long way of media experiments and pursuits, authors more and more frequently choose the territory of painting. This media layer caused the emergence of new a conceptual and plot format of image creation. Artists of the new figurative art are challenged to the task of exploring subtle psychologism through human body, they are once again searching for the universal in individual, subjecting artistic pursuits to craftsmanship.

Every author has his or her own vision of the figure's place in art. At times, accumulation of forms and images, irrational emotional manifestations - physical sufferings and fear on the verge of madness - are present. Hypnotic influence of portrayed human body "invites" the spectator to an intellectual game - exploration of physiology and sexuality on macro- and microlevels, experimental comparison and juxtaposition of the psychedelic form and its content. Ukrainian authors are quite diverse. Insolent Koterlin blurs formal limits, employing methods of postmodernism and ironizing, at the same time, by emphasizing its dying, while still remaining a figurative artist. Bielov experiments with contemporary and socially critical graphics on the verge of illustration and street art. Perfetskyi is an adept of street art with idealization of the form and literal layering of figurative images from different epochs. Kostyrko, as a "new old master", plays his game in the sphere of mystification and art history, bringing the figurative to a new level, that, however hasn't acquired a more relevant name in his works yet. Painting destroys the understanding of the surrounding, reveals and shamelessly exhibits new sides and dimensions, and substantive plots characteristic of everyday life is decomposed into geometric elements of semi-abstract. Some canvases are nothing more than artist's reflections on the balance of powers and social rules, that make an attempt to explore the person through the movement of lines and composition of color spots.

Integration of new figurative art in contemporary art is a rather predictable phenomenon. After all, everything returns sometimes, going through a cycle from saturation to reconsideration, and, as a result, a new "coming". At the same time, the main issue remains - themes, images and their sources, methods of the figurative painting today, and also causes and contexts of its existence. And the main principle - on a condition further development of the new figurative art - the subject and character of the story, since it is not the form that demands radical change.
