To be a plant means to grow.
A lot of examples are based exactly on the plant metaphors (in this case – Hegelian), they are related to European history, culture as such, and participation in their movement, certain human's place. The exhibition of Andriy Sagaidakovsky and Olena Turyanska «Vegetation» – is an attempt to provide different views on such artistic optics: when key philosophical questions (Martin Heidegger is more often for Sagaidakovsky; while Turyanska refers to the existentialism) are resolved in the art field, disclosed by the artist through attention to the plants metamorphosis.
«Positive» dynamics of this reflection becomes visible in Sagaidakovsky projects: from «Walk on Forest Paths» (March 2014, Ya Gallery Art Center, Kyiv), when the artist has found himself in passive state, impossibility to paint, and exhibited old works to review his own path; once more through «Landscapes» (April 2015, Ya Gallery Art Center, Dnipropetrovsk), which have become the exposition of generous planting, and now – to the fast growth, vegetative stage.
The new works tone – is a hymn to this positivity. In the «Der Sieger» (English: The Victor) carpet – a shot from the eponymous movie (1932), where Hans Albers – an actor, who personified success in all circumstances, during the inter-war period of Germany is depicted. «The grey man has become a cool guy», – Sagaidakovsky briefly describes a movie plot. A hero is surrounded by women on the carpet, on other one – children are wondering about toys, with faces which are foreseen their existence, and the trees rustling on the sides of mountains recalls the artist by its music – he is not forgotten by the Nature. Even the broom has found its place on the carpet. The question «Broom?» in the relevant work – is a kind of polyphonic irony. Whether it has to sweep the garbage or, in the contemporary art case, to move it toward exhibition area. Or, currently – to serve as an artist tool, when strong hands apply paint to the carpet.
Olena Turyanska's works – are made of paper, black-and-white and very natty (especially comparing to the broom behavior and the carpet density). The artist displayes small drawings in the exposition, which are grouped together, and spatial installations, one of which is created in the form of papercutting. In the pure concentration of the black-and-white poles, light and shadows – the fullness of moment should be opened. When the plant does one and the same process, pointing its own multidimensionality.
The carpet and the paper – are two ways, in which artists speak about presence and existence. Double-sided opaque sky (Andriy Sagaidakovsky, «Sky», 2016), is filled with a blue color on the one hand and on the other hand is made of drawings, or paper cutting – all of them require the active view. Something has to move, but something - to fail. Therefore «Vegetation» – is not just a work creating, but active viewer staying in one space with works, where the experience is an integral part of the exposition fact.
Spring frost has ended.
To be a viewer means to watch.
